The prostate is a gland the size and shape of a chestnut that surrounds the upper portion of the male urethra. Its main function is to produce part of the fluid that makes up semen. As men age, the prostate may become the source of numerous problems. The two most common age-related prostate conditions are prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and prostate cancer. BPH affects more than half of men over age 50, and approximately 80% of men over the age of 75—or about 10 million Americans. Prostate cancer affects approximately 1 in 6 men during their lifetime. After skin cancer, it is the second most diagnosed form of cancer in men.

As with other chronic conditions, prevention and early diagnosis are critical. A sensible diet, a healthy lifestyle, and a carefully chosen supplement can all play an important role in prevention. Early diagnosis should begin with your healthcare professional. Most experts agree that all men should include prostate exams with their annual physicals. If you have a family history of prostate cancer or if you are African American, you should start having prostate exams at the age of 40.
